The Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka held a workshop titled ‘Experience Chinese Folk Dance’ on Saturday, 8 December 2018, at the Faculty of Political Sciences.
The Chinese professor briefed the participants in this Saturday’s workshop about the features and significance of folk dance in China and mentioned several well-known folk dances such as Dai dance, Mongolia dance and Xinjiang dance, a precious national legacy of Chinese people.
Xinjiang has had, for example, the reputation of "the Town of Singing and Dancing" since ancient times. The ethnic groups that live in this northwest region of China are good at singing and dancing, such as Uygur, Kazak, Kirgiz, Tajik, Tatar, Mongolian, Manchu and Uzbek. It is renowned for graceful melodious music and splendid dancing, reflecting the unique customs of minorities in the northwest border areas.
The professor chose to present the ethnic Dai dance called ‘A girl from Dai Nationality’ and showed some of the basic movements, hand gestures and jumps to the participants, who quickly joined her in the dance.
The Dai nationality is one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. Dai people are gifted to be master of dancing. As early as 2 000 years ago, the Dai's folk art has reached a sophistication level. There are more than 300 kinds of Dai dances passed down to nowadays.
This was the third Saturday workshop organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka with the aim to present different elements of Chinese culture to the citizens of Banja Luka.
