The Lecture 'Europe and China Through Centuries' Held

Updated: Dec 10, 2018

On 23 November 2018, the Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka organized the lecture of Prof. Dr. Boro Bronza on the topic of ‘Europe and China Through Centuries’ at the Faculty of Political Sciences at the University of Banja Luka.

Professor Bronza talked about the relations between China and Europe as well as the development of those relations from the time when China was ruled by the Qin Dynasty (221-202 BC) to 1912.

During the one-hour lecture, the visitors had the opportunity to hear more about the dynasties that marked the Chinese history – Juan, Ming and Qing. The last one was the Qing dynasty that ruled up until 1911, when China abolished the imperial system and became a republic.

The relations of Europe and China in this millennium-period were permeated with missionaries, sending of emissaries, better and worse periods, and wars. Professor Bronza particularly referred to the 19th century and the relations between China and Great Britain and Germany. This age is important when talking about China-British relations, as it was the century of Opium Wars and putting of Hong Kong under the sovereignty of Great Britain.

The lecture given by Professor Bronza constitutes an important aspect of the role of the Confucius Institute, which wants to bring Chinese history, culture, lifestyle and its relations with the European countries, back then and now, closer to everyone interested. This lecture is a good overture for an even better understanding of China.

‘China and its relations with the European continent are more and more in focus of the European public and it is of the utmost importance that the University of Banja Luka and the Confucius Institute, and Republika Srpska in general, follow the trend of studying different aspects of Chinese expanse, which certainly implies adequate valorization of historical relations between China and Europe,’ said Bronza, and added that, as it is always the case, something can and should be learnt from history and applied for the future.

Professor Boro Bronza takes the view that it is important to deepen the knowledge of the geopolitical climate that has and will have an essential significance for our future political development.

This was one of a series of thematic lectures on China and its culture, tradition and economic and social trends, organized by the Confucius Institute, and similar lectures will be organized together with professors from the University of Banja Luka also in the forthcoming period.

Prof. Dr. Boro Bronza is Professor of History at the Department of History at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Banja Luka.
