Presentation of Chinese Language as Elective Course held at the Faculty of Philology at University

On 19th October 2018, Chinese language professors of the Confucius Institute at University of Banja Luka held a presentation on Chinese language as an elective course and on advantages of learning Chinese language at the Faculty of Philology, which was attended by 25 freshmen.

Chinese language has been introduced as an elective course at the Faculty of Philology at University of Banja Luka for the first time this year, and it will be held by native Chinese Language professors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka.

To show the students that it is not so hard to learn and speak Chinese, professor Gao briefed them on the basics of the language and illustrated a couple of homophonic words, such as “mā mɑ”, “bà bɑ” and “ kāfēi”, which they had a chance to pronounce by themselves. The lecture was very interactive, allowing students to practice the pronunciation of words and the four tones in Chinese language.

As for Chinese characters, professor Gao showed the inscriptions carved on the tortoise shell and explained that Chinese characters evolve from graphic images, which look like these:“人(person)”,“大(big)”,“日(sun)” and“月(moon)”.

Students found the presentation very interesting and amusing, as well as that the Chinese language course could be very useful for them to take.

The presentation held aimed at introducing this language to the students, so that they could get a clearer picture of what it looks like to study Chinese, and at showing all the benefits and advantages of learning Chinese language and culture. The students were briefed that they would, among other things, have an opportunity to get scholarships, attend language learning camps in China, and participate in the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary/College Students.
