Updated: Aug 17, 2018

On 21 June 2018,the Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka joined the Academy of Arts in celebrating the World Music Day and brought new elements to the event by performing Chinese traditional music tunes in the mini concerts at several different locations in Banja Luka, one of which was the Municipal Building.

Ms Cai Ying, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, played the Chinese musical instrument Guqin (a seven-stringed instrument that has been played since ancient times and has traditionally been regarded as an instrument of great refinement) at the official opening ceremony in the Municipal Building, and so presented it for the first time in this region.

Ms Ying also played it in the evening in the pedestrian zone in the centre of the town with Ms Gao Yang, a Chinese teacher of the Confucius Institute, who performed Taichi.

In addition, a group of musicians from the Academy of Arts performed at several different locations singing the Chinese traditional song Jasmine.

World Music Day has been celebrated for over 30 years with free concerts and open-air performances, in the pedestrian zone and busy walks as well as in public cultural institutions, in hundreds of cities around the world to surprise the public and remind people of the importance of music.

World Music Day was originated more than 30 years ago by the then French Minister of Culture, and the first celebration called Fête de la Musique (Festival of Music) was held on 21 June 1982 in Paris. In 2010, the Academy of Arts at the University of Banja Luka officially ranked the city of Banja Luka among the cities in the world that celebrate this holiday.
