Children Learned About Chinese Customs at the RS Museum

The workshop titled “Paper Cut Art“ and Kung Fu, held on 16 February 2019 at the Museum of the Republic of Srpska, was attended by a great number of children who had the opportunity to gain some new skills, the ones children of their age in China have.

This event was organized by the Confucius Institute of the University of Banja Luka and the Museum of the Republic of Srpska on the occasion of marking the Chinese New Year.

Children that gathered at the RS Museum were introduced with the history and meaning of paper cutting in the Chinese culture by the Chinese Director of Confucius Institute and they learned how to cut and make some simple paper cut decorations, such as lanterns.

„The Confucius institute is organizing a number of events during February on the occasion of marking the Chinese New Year. Accordingly, it also organized this workshop of paper cut art in cooperation with the RS Museum, as a form of ancient Chinese skill that represents the cultural values of the Chinese people and that is especially practiced during this month due to its symbolic meanings," said Ljiljana Stević, Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka to the journalists who came to the Museum to broadcast this event.

„In addition to learning the Chinese language, the Institute also organizes different courses, lectures and activities in which citizens can directly get informed about various aspects of Chinese culture and can learn more about the culture, customs and traditions of the People's Republic of China," added Stević.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the first day of Chinese New Year is also the first day of spring and it is advisable to practice more in this period. This was the reason to also organize a class of kung fu and have the children learn some new movements that are characteristic for the Chinese culture, with the supervision and guidance of the Chinese professor of the Confucius Institute. The children had a good time while learning kung fu.

„Excellence is never achieved by chance. Chinese creativity is recognizable by its delicate composition and colorful shapes. Today we marked the Chinese New Year in the RS Museum with the same colorful activities that stimulate the love of our audience towards the perfection of skills that only long-lasting tradition can bring. The goal of today's event was to learn more about the Chinese culture as well as the Chinese way of creating and thinking, alike. Kung fu is a skill that is generated by the desire for enlightenment and for achieving precise and excellent moves. The Chinese paper cutting has been cherished as traditional skill incited by the worship of ancestors and gods since the third century BC, while nowadays it is a modern and interesting visual art. Both skills require discipline and focus. To create something great means to create it with patience and dedication, with a clear focus on the perfect cut, the perfect line. It is the skill of both the mind and hands,“ stated the spokesperson of RS Museum Ana Brataševec, pedagogue of the Museum.
