The first roundtable for sinologists from the Republic of Srpska and Serbia, at which the
methodology of teaching Chinese in secondary schools and faculties was discussed, was held on 24 September 2020 in the classroom of the Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka.
A lecture on the methodology of teaching Chinese language was given by Selena Pjević, a long-time professor of Chinese language at the Philological Gymnasium in Belgrade.
As explained during the lecture, the students of the Philological Gymnasium in Belgrade have
five to six classes in Chinese per week, and already in the third grade they take the HSK (Level
5) test, which corresponds to the B2 language level.
The first roundtable for sinologists in Banja Luka sets grounds for many joint projects of
professors from Belgrade, Banja Luka and East Sarajevo and this is a significant event for
lecturers at the Confucius Institute and lecturers at the Department of Chinese and English
Language at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of East Sarajevo. In this way, closer
cooperation between sinologists in the Republic of Srpska and Serbia has been established, and the plan is to set up a joint platform for teaching Chinese.
The roundtable was attended by the teaching assistants at the Department of Chinese and English Language at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of East Sarajevo Jelena Vujičić and Doroteja Klačar, education inspector and adviser at the RS Pedagogical Institute Kristina
Mataruga, Chinese language translator from East Sarajevo Dajana Majmunović, directors of the University of Banja Luka Confucius Institute Ljiljana Stević and Shen Li, and Chinese language professors at the University of Banja Luka Confucius Institute Anja Mudrenović and Sonja Milić.
Selena Pjević is the first Chinese language professor in the schools of Serbia and the author of
the Chinese language programme for secondary schools and faculties adopted by the Ministry of Education of Serbia in 1997. She has dedicated her 25-year long work experience to spreading love for China, Chinese language and culture.
