Confucius Institute – Workshops

At workshops and public events, where the Confucius Institute presents different Chinese cultural elements to the general public, citizens are mostly interested in the Chinese tea ceremony, which is a part of the Chinese tradition and a philosophy that exudes harmony, peace, and gratitude. The older population is predominantly interested in the Tai Chi classes, which are regularly conducted by the Confucius Institute, because of the many benefits they have on physical and mental health. More to this, the Confucius Institute has shared traditional Chinese medicine with a wider population through several lectures given by outstanding experts.

The youngsters find various educational and cultural workshops interesting, such as the workshops on Chinese Calligraphy, Traditional Chinese Painting, Paper Cutting Art, Table Tennis, Chinese Chess, Kung Fu Martial Arts, etc. Citizens may also learn more about the culture, tradition, social and economic trends in China at the lectures the Confucius Institute regularly organises.

China is probably the most famous country for its tea rituals and culture. It is believed that the tea ceremony originated thousands of years ago and that at that time, Chinese monks paid homage to nature. Today, the tea ceremony is an inseparable part of Chinese culture and is an indispensable part of many day-to-day and festive occasions.

This workshop is organised with the aim of presenting this aspect of Chinese culture to the public and enabling all people interested in it to experience it by learning how to write Chinese characters with a brush and ink. It is also referred to as the art of Chinese writing, which in China, from a very early period, was viewed as the supreme visual art form. It was more valued than painting and sculpture, and ranked alongside poetry as a means of self-expression and cultivation.

Workshop on Chinese Paper Cutting Art, a type of art which has spread from China to the whole world and is today very popular, always attracts a great number of children and adults who wish to experience this ancient skill. Although paper cutting is popular around the globe, only the Chinese paper cut was listed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. This skill has a history of more than 1,500 years, and it represents the cultural values of the people of China.

We also organise Chinese martial arts workshops with a licensed trainer. Martial arts are an inseparable part of the Chinese tradition and culture and are of great importance in the positive psycho-physical development of a child. In China, the term kung fu or gong fu does not necessarily refer to martial arts, but it can refer to any skill achieved and perfected through hard work and practice. In its traditional meaning, martial arts is referred to as wushu (Chinese martial arts). Kung fu represents any technique that can be used in a fight, so it is more correct to say that kung fu refers to martial techniques in general.

Many love this ancient board game because of the essence of Chinese philosophy it contains. For example, Confucianism emphasises the rule of the golden mean, that people should not go to extremes and that they should not reveal everything about their personality. Similarly, in the game of Weiqi you have to hide your intentions and not reveal them until the end. According to traditional Taoist doctrine, if you want to take something from others, you must first give up something of your own. This is equally applicable to the strategies of this board game. The rule of this strategy board game, which has the largest number of players in the world, is for the players to fence off more territory than their opponent. It is played mostly on a wooden board with horizontal and vertical lines using the so-called stones. The players take turns placing their stones on the vacant intersections on the board, and each player has 180 stones, one of which is black and the other white.

Table tennis (the official name of the sport in China is ping pong - 乐乓) is today the largest amateur sport in China, with 300 million players and is considered China's national sport. The Chinese national table tennis players are the most successful in the history of the world championships. This game, like many other ball games, is thought to be a variation of very old games that existed in the oldest civilisations, especially in China.
