Year of the Red Fire Horse Celebrated with Preschool, Primary and Secondary School Children

In honour of the Chinese New Year, the Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka organized a series of Chinese culture workshops for preschool, primary and secondary school children during February and March.
On 23 February 2026, a Chinese calligraphy workshop and an introduction to traditional Chinese clothing and fashion were organized for students of the ‘Nikola Tesla’ Primary School in Banja Luka. That week also marked the International Mother Language Day, which was also the occasion for organizing the Culture, Writing and Language Week.
The following day, on 24 February 2026, the Confucius Institute organized interesting cultural activities for preschoolers in the ‘Sovice’ kindergarten, who learned about various aspects of Chinese culture in an amusing and interactive way.
On 20 March 2026, the Confucius Institute also organized a Chinese calligraphy workshop for students of the ‘Jovan Dučić’ Grammar School in Doboj. The workshop, which brought together about thirty students from the first and fourth grades, was led by the Chinese professor Wang Jihan, who introduced them to Chinese characters and Chinese words. This was a great opportunity for the students to get acquainted with this aspect of Chinese culture, but also to talk with representatives of the Confucius Institute and learn more about the customs of this Far Eastern country.
Prior to the workshop, Marina Nedeljković, a third-year student of the Sinology Study Programme at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Banja Luka, a former student of the Doboj Grammar School, presented the students with the advantages of studying in this study programme, and talked about what attracted her to studying at the University of Banja Luka, as well as the opportunities for exchange and study visits to the People's Republic of China during her studies.
Since its establishment in 2018, the Confucius Institute at the University of Banja Luka has been cooperating with secondary schools in Doboj, where it used to organize the Chinese language courses. Today, students of all secondary schools in the Republic of Srpska have the opportunity to study Chinese online at the Confucius Institute.
This year's Chinese New Year began on 17 February 2026 and will last until 5 February 2027. Today, it is not only celebrated in China, but throughout the world as various cultural and artistic events, where the general public has the opportunity to learn more about various aspects of Chinese culture.
